A Pattern Language - Towns Buildings Construction

Rather grandly, this book claims to be a working document for ‘a new traditional post-industrial architecture’. It contains 253 design patterns each describing a challenge or opportunity occuring in our built environment and suggests solutions in such a way that the application of the pattern to the problem will result in a unique but effective solution.

The patterns range in scale, from the macro Independent Regions pattern that concerns itself with the size and nature of autonomous congregations of people, through to number 253 things from your life, a pattern that accentuates the need for the personalisation in our surroundings.

Not all patterns will be of relevance to all projects, many are very high level, but that does not detract from the value of this book, the approach to problem solving it takes and the thought provoking nature of its content.

Recommended to ensure that your healthy house design is as robust and appropriate as possible.

The power of approaching design through the use a patterns is evident when it is considered that the work of Alexander and co. in this book lead to the adoption of design patterns within the world of IT systems development, most famously communicated through ‘Design patterns : elements of reusable object-oriented software‘ by Erich Gamma & co.
